CoachCorp: A programme that supports local sport

print the content item create pdf file of the content item

CoachCorp is a sport volunteer recruitment programme that gives employees the opportunity to coach, manage and officiate in community sport during normal work time. It is ideal for employee personal development and helping achieve corporate social responsibility outcomes. The programme is managed externally free of charge.
Sport and Recreation New Zealand (SPARC), in association with Sport Manawatu, oversees the programme in the Manawatu, Tararua and Horowhenua regions.

Coach Corp Programme aims

  • To increase the numbers of coaches in the community and the quality of coaching.
  • Bring benefits to employees, businesses and to people participating in sport. Companies that are part of the CoachCorp programme contribute to New Zealand sport by allowing participating employees flexi-time to be coaches, managers and officials in school and club level sport. This allows more people to participate in sport and raises the performance of the athletes.

How does it work?

  • Once a company signs up with CoachCorp, their employees can register to join the programme.
  • When an employee signs up, they will be contacted by Sport NZ, a National Sport Organisation or Sport Manawatu, who will work with them to arrange an appropriate placement.
  • Once registered, the company allows the employee two to four hours a week flexi-time for the duration of the sport season, which is generally 10-14 weeks.

Benefits to businesses

CoachCorp businesses have a range of benefits.

  • CoachCorp can easily be added to the range of human resources programmes in any company - and no money changes hands.
  • Employees in the programme will be seen as ambassadors for your company in the local sporting scene and strengthen your links with the local community.
  • Once registered for CoachCorp, employees will learn leadership, development and management skills, which they will all bring back to the workplace.
  • Support for employee interests outside work shows your company's commitment to work/life balance.
  • Backing sport actively shows your employees that you value physical activity and will encourage them to lead more active lives.
  • Participation shows your company's commitment to wider social responsibility.
  • You will get recognition through advertisements placed in national media.

Success story

Tanya Law - ASB Bank and Coach at Freemans Bay Primary, Auckland - said the following about her experiences with CoachCorp;

"What a wonderful idea this initiative is! I currently work for the ASB Bank and have had the opportunity to coach Year 4 Netball at Freemans Bay Primary in Auckland. What a ball!

I coach the kids during their lunch break on Monday afternoons and it has to be the best start to the week ever. No matter how bad my morning has been, or what work is waiting for me when I return to my desk, nothing can wipe the smile off my face after training is finished. It has to be one of the best feelings in the world, seeing these kids, improving while they are having fun at the same time, especially when they had no idea about the sport and only had a passion to learn how to play. Thank you to CoachCorp and my employer for this opportunity to meet and coach these wonderful kids. I fully recommend this experience to anyone who is looking to give it a go."
