Step-bystep guide to planning your video

HOW TO GUIDE

Creating a great video

Creating a great video takes a bit of planning, creativity, and some basic technical know-how. We've put together this handy how to guide guide to help you out.

Step 1: Understand the topic

Before you begin, think about the topic and what it means. Ask yourself:

  • What message do you want your video to share?
  • How can you show this message in a creative, fun, and engaging way?

Step 2: Brainstorm ideas

  • Think about different ways to present your video: a skit, a real-life example, interviews, animations, or even a song.
  • Jot down your ideas and pick the one that excites you the most.

Step 3: Write a script

A script helps you organise what people will say and do in your video.

  • Introduction: Start by grabbing attention. For example, use a fun fact, a question, or a quick action scene.
  • Middle: Show your message. This could be examples of of the topic in a humourous or thought-provoking way.
  • Ending: Wrap up with a clear, memorable message or call to action (e.g., “Let’s make sports fun for everyone!”).

Keep it short and to the point—your video must be 2 minutes or less.

Step 4: Create a storyboard

A storyboard is like a comic strip that shows the shots in your video.

  1. Draw rectangles (like a frame) on a piece of paper or use a free online storyboard tool.
  2. Sketch each scene and write a quick description. Include:
    • Who’s in the shot?
    • What’s happening?
    • Where is it taking place?
    • What will the viewer hear (dialogue, music, sound effects)?

Step 5: Set up your shoot

Camera tips

  • Use a steady surface or tripod to avoid shaky footage.
  • Film horizontally if possible, unless you’re creating a TikTok or Reel, which should be vertical.
  • Experiment with different angles for variety (e.g., close-ups for emotions, wide shots for action).

Sound tips

  • Record in a quiet space to avoid distracting background noise.
  • If speaking, make sure voices are loud and clear. If using a phone, the mic should face the speaker.

Lighting tips

  • Film in a well-lit space. Natural light is great! Avoid filming with bright light behind the subject, as it creates shadows.

Step 6: Film your video

  • Follow your script and storyboard.
  • Record multiple takes of each scene so you have options.
  • Be creative—use props, costumes, or special effects if they help convey your message.

Step 7: Edit your video

Use free editing apps like CapCut, iMovie, or Adobe Premiere Rush to refine your footage.

  • Trim clips: Remove any mistakes or unnecessary parts.
  • Add text or titles: Highlight key points or display your message.
  • Include music or sound effects: Choose music that fits your theme. Many apps have free soundtracks.
  • Check timing: Keep the video under 2 minutes.

Step 8: Watch and review

  • Play your video for family or friends and ask for feedback.
  • Check that the sound, lighting, and messages are clear.

Step 9: Upload your video

  • Once you’re happy with your video, save it in the correct format (usually MP4 or MOV).
  • Visit our website and upload it using the competition form. Follow the instructions carefully.

Tips for success

  • Keep it positive and engaging!
  • Make sure your message is clear.
  • Have fun and let your creativity shine!

Good luck! We can’t wait to see your videos. 🎥✨
